This page shows a collection of books about the COVID-19 coronavirus. Most of them are quite new (since the pandemic is itself new) and have been published in the last few months, or more recently than that even.

I'll add proper reviews of these soon...

I haven't (at least, not yet, and possibly not at all) written a page about the coronavirus itself, since there's so much conflicting information out there, and the expert opinions themselves are changing over time, it is really hard to determine the truth vs. the misinformation. So a decent fraction of anything I wrote would probably end up being wrong in the end.

I haven't contracted COVID-19 myself, nor do I know of anyone personally who has. So anything I advise would mostly just be copied and pasted (even if somewhat thought about and filtered) material.

It seems best to me to leave the giving of concrete advice to the medical experts who have spent much of their lives studying contagious diseases, epidemics, pandemics, and other related things.

My Book NOTE: If things (such as the economy) were really to completely crash — physical, paper books will be readable and useful for much longer than those on electronic devices. And will still be readable irrespective of whether or not you have electrical power.

Since the identification of the first cases of the coronavirus in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, there has been a significant amount of confusion regarding the origin and spread of the so-called ‘coronavirus’, officially named SARS-CoV-2, and the cause of the disease COVID-19.

Conflicting messages from the media and officials across different countries and organizations, the abundance of disparate sources of information, unfounded conspiracy theories on the origins of the newly emerging virus and the inconsistent public health measures across different countries, have all served to increase the level of anxiety in the population.

Where did the virus come from? How is it transmitted? How does it cause disease? Is it like flu? What is a pandemic? What can we do to stop its spread? Written by a leading expert, this concise and accessible introduction provides answers to the most common questions surrounding coronavirus for a general audience.

Special Features:

  • Provides a thoughtful and balanced introduction to the coronavirus SARS-CoV2 and the disease COVID-19

Date published: 31st March 2020 and 7th July 2020

'It is hard to imagine a more timely book...much of the modern world will make more sense having read it.' - The Times

'Brilliant and authoritative' - Alex Bellos, author of Alex's Adventures in Numberland

A deadly virus suddenly explodes into the population. A political movement gathers pace, and then quickly vanishes. An idea takes off like wildfire, changing our world forever. We live in a world that's more interconnected than ever before. Our lives are shaped by outbreaks - of disease, of misinformation, even of violence - that appear, spread and fade away with bewildering speed. To understand them, we need to learn the hidden laws that govern them. From 'superspreaders' who might spark a pandemic or bring down a financial system to the social dynamics that make loneliness catch on, The Rules of Contagion offers compelling insights into human behaviour and explains how we can get better at predicting what happens next.

Along the way, Adam Kucharski explores how innovations spread through friendship networks, what links computer viruses with folk stories - and why the most useful predictions aren't necessarily the ones that come true.

Outbreaks and Epidemics: Battling Infection from Measles to Coronavirus, by Meera Senthilingam - Survival (and Other) Books About the COVID-19 Coronavirus - Survival Books - Survival, Sustainable Living NEW: Outbreaks and Epidemics: Battling Infection from Measles to Coronavirus, by Meera Senthilingam.

Date published: 2nd June 2020

A journey through the history and science of epidemics and pandemics - from AIDS to Zika.

For centuries mankind has waged war against the infections that, left untreated, would have the power to wipe out communities, or even entire populations. Yet for all our advanced scientific knowledge, only one human disease - smallpox - has ever been eradicated globally.

In recent years, outbreaks of Ebola and Zika have provided vivid examples of how difficult it is to contain an infection once it strikes, and the panic that a rapidly spreading epidemic can ignite.

But while we chase the diseases we are already aware of, new ones are constantly emerging, initiating a new race to identify them. At the same time, antimicrobial resistance is harnessing infections that we once knew how to control, enabling them to thrive once more.

Meera Senthilingam presents a timely look at humanity's ongoing battle against infection, examining the successes and failures of the past, along with how we are confronting the challenges of today, and our chances of eradicating disease in the future.

On Pandemics: Deadly Diseases from Bubonic Plague to Coronavirus, by David Waltner-Towes - Survival (and Other) Books About the COVID-19 Coronavirus - Survival Books - Survival, Sustainable Living NEW: On Pandemics: Deadly Diseases from Bubonic Plague to Coronavirus, by David Waltner-Towes.

Date published: 29th June 2020

Written by a leading epidemiologist, this engrossing book answers our questions about animal diseases that jump to humans - called zoonoses - including why they have become more common in recent history, and what we can do about them.

Almost all pandemics and epidemics - including SARS, Ebola and now COVID-19 - have been caused by diseases that come to us from animals. In On Pandemics, David Waltner-Toews gathers the latest research to profile dozens of illnesses.

Why do zoonotic diseases jump from animals to humans - and why do some hang around for good? How have governments responded to pandemics and epidemics throughout history, for better or worse? How have climate change, industrialised farming, cultural practices, biodiversity loss and globalisation made these diseases not only possible, but the inevitable outcomes of our modern lifestyles?

Coronaviruses have made bats their home for centuries. Until SARS came along, we didn't know they were there, nor do we know how many other death-dealing viruses might be living undetected in wildlife. On Pandemics examines the increasing impact of animal-borne diseases on our world, and encourages us to re-examine our role in pandemics - for the health of the planet as well as our own survival.

The Climate Cure: Solving the Climate Emergency in the Era of COVID-19, by Tim Flannery - Survival (and Other) Books About the COVID-19 Coronavirus - Survival Books - Survival, Sustainable Living NEW: The Climate Cure: Solving the Climate Emergency in the Era of COVID-19, by Tim Flannery.

Date published: 3 November 2020 Pre-Order Pre-Order

Australians are witnessing an unprecedented government response to crisis-swift decisive action to avert catastrophe. And the advice of scientists has informed every step of the way.

But for decades the advice of scientists on the impending catastrophe that climate change will bring has been ignored, dismissed and even ridiculed.

Renowned climate scientist Tim Flannery takes aim at those in government and in the fossil fuel industries for their inaction and lies in response to calls to address the very real and immediate threats posed by climate change. Threats that are now upon us, as the 2019/20 Australian bushfires and floods have shown.

Flannery sees 2020 as a turning point. He explores the measures at our disposal to reduce CO2 emissions. He looks at the ways carbon can be drawn out of the atmosphere and safely stored to stabilise atmospheric carbon levels. And he demands a new approach that puts tackling climate change in the hands of the scientists who can lead the way.

The Climate Cure is an action plan for survival, a call for government policies that, like its COVID-19 response, rise to the very real climate challenges we face. There is reason for optimism-if we act now.

Mars Girl: Approaching Extinction Way Worse Than Coronavirus, by Igor Kryan - Survival (and Other) Books About the COVID-19 Coronavirus - Survival Books - Survival, Sustainable Living NEW: Mars Girl: Approaching Extinction Way Worse Than Coronavirus, by Igor Kryan.

Date published: 18th March 2020

Note that this book appears to be quite short. It looks interesting though, I think I'll order it soon. This is what the publisher has to say about it:

This book is unique. The first part of the book is a science fiction novel about a young girl who was forced to escape Earth to Mars due to the extinction event that will hit us way harder than COVID 19 Coronavirus in the nearest future. Red Planet is the only hope for humanity to survive. While the second part of the book describes, from the scientific point of view, why the events depicted in the first part shall come to pass. And it is not a question of IF but WHEN? This book is your only chance to prepare yourself and your family for unavoidability that is unstoppable like a fast approaching runaway freight train to end us all.

Igor Kryan is famous for the myriad of his correct predictions of the future including the most recent three: about Coronavirus in the book Animal Liberation Front (2018), Promise of world wide disruption before 2020 in the book The Second Coming (2018) and the Prophecy of the coming Doomsday in the book Singularity Apocalypse (2019)

Making the Last Days Your Best Days: A Biblical Worldview of the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020, by Derrick I. Temple, Sr - Survival (and Other) Books About the COVID-19 Coronavirus - Survival Books - Survival, Sustainable Living NEW: Making the Last Days Your Best Days: A Biblical Worldview of the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020, by Derrick I. Temple, Sr.

Date published: 21 June 2020

This one looks like it's going to be pretty hardcore in terms of the "doom" side of things, at least on Earth. I think I'll have to get it, just because whatever ends up happening, if you can handle the worst-case scenario (in a worldly sense), then anything else that happens has got to be an improvement on that. From the publishing information:

Making the Last Days Your Best Days is a book that looks at the Coronavirus outbreak from a biblical perspective. Pandemics are often described as pestilences in the Bible and are seen as a sign of the times. This book is a practical exposition of Jesus' teaching in Matthew 24:1-31. It deals with Jesus' call to Believers to stand fast, not fear and look for the coming of Jesus Christ. This work deals with the practical adjustments pastors and local churches have had to make and must make during this outbreak. This book is intended to encourage and exhort pastors and Christians to make the necessary adjustments to continue to be a light in this world in the midst of one of the greatest evangelistic opportunities of our time, i.e., the Coronavirus outbreak.

Making the Last Days Your Best Days also challenges us as pastors to make the adjustments necessary to still be the church although we are temporarily restricted from public gatherings, and rightly so. It is also written as a dedication to pastors and all who have lost loved ones during this pandemic. The world is full of fear during this outbreak as well as many within the local church and religious assemblies. Seeing this outbreak from the larger context of a biblical worldview places less attention on the outbreak and more attention on the God who is in control of this pandemic. Because this pandemic is a sign of the times, the title of this book is exactly what this book is about, i.e., making the last days our best days.
